And this is your reminder that this series is being made to enrich known transphobe JK Rowling and take away money from the original cast members who stood up to her about her hate. Any money she gets from this series literally goes to lobbying against trans rights in the UK (see the recent court decision she funded, as well as her setting up an independent fund for further cases).

If you give any money to watch this series you cannot pretend to support trans rights!

Money goes to the shitbag. That makes sense.

But can you prove this is being made to take money from the original cast? How does that even work?

Disclaimer: I have t read the article so I’m speculating a bit.

If the new series is a retread of the existing movies, instead of watching the movies, people will watch the hbo series. This would stop royalties or whatever the cut actors get from the movies and redirect to the new cast.

          That’s not how this works.

You can’t demand that no other media competes with your work in order for you to maintain royalties.

It’s like saying anyone releasing a fantasy movie is undermining the Harry Potter movies actors’ royalties because on some level a fantasy movie may decrease demand for the Harry Potter movies.

These types of arguments do not inspire confidence in the anti-Rowling camp (and there are definitely things Rowling can be criticized for).

I will note that I was just guessing at what the argument was, I don’t really see it as taking royalties away, but as a cash grab, cashing in on nostalgia. I mean each book a season? Ok… sure this is like ‘the hobbit’ being made 3 films.

Though it wouldn’t surprise me all that much if evidence came out ms Rowling really pitched it to try and keep the paycheck from the three from the movie. They have been somewhat vocal about their disagreements with her ‘takes’

Ok I skimmed it, very boring to have to em list who’s playing what because I don’t care.

Your argument is any other fantasy movie, but this is a retelling of the same damn shit. It’s like if you were to come along and write a series of books about uhh…. Bald jugley, the boy wizard. You know, the evil wizard tried to kill him and now he and two other misfit students take on the forces of evil, the first book will be bald jugley and the stick of long life! And then be annoyed that you were taken to copyright claims…

I agree it’s a bit of a stretch to say you directly taking royalties from the original movies but come on.

Also, fuck off with the ‘this argument doesn’t inspire confidence in the anti-Rowling blah blah’ if a stretch argument on a new series directly retreading the same damn stories makes you forget about what a piece of shit jkkkr is, then were you really ever in that camp?

Pointing out an incoherent arguement (built around the financial compensation of rather wealthy actors) does not make me a Rowling supporter.

I am in neither camp. I don’t see what this has to do with my OP.
