  • I’m not saying he wasn’t guilty, I’m saying he was an operator in a system that was already corrupt rather than doing something unusually criminal. I am no expert, so please correct me if I have misunderstood something.

As I read it, he was found guilty of taking campaign bribes from wealthy oil businesses because it was a requirement for having any chance of getting elected in Brazil. Petrobras had essentially become a criminal organization that was controlling huge numbers of politicians, and their support was a requirement to win elections. Lula seems to have participated in the corrupt system, but it does not seem like he was the person who made it be that way.

When I say his arrest was for political reasons, I mean the embarrassment of him being drug out of his home in his underpants seemed to be more about damaging the reputation of the Workers Party rather than any suggestion that he was the kind of criminal who needed to be taken by a forceful raid. I probably worded my first post a little poorly.

  • Of course, redneck rapist. It’s not like the mustache has been one of the most popular facial hair styles in history…

Behold this list of “redneck rapists”:

    Salvador Dali
    Martin Luther King
    Kaiser Wilhelm II
    Mahatma Gandhi
    Paul McCartney
    Richard Wagner
    Rudyard Kipling
    George Orwell
    Albert Einstein
    Tom Selleck
    Freddie Mercury
    Charlie Chaplin
    Mark Twain
    Friedrich Nietzsche
    Groucho Marx
    Burt Reynolds
    Theodore Roosevelt
    John Waters
    Frank Zappa
    Clark Gable
    Carl Jung

  • There are a lot of sides to this. Some of them may have seen things and been oblivious, others may have seen things that registered later, while still others may have known about the crimes. That is why we need more than a flight log list.

I grew up in a very affluent family, and attended all sorts of political and corporate events in my youth along with my cousins. None of us were exploited or invited there to be exploited—our families thought it was good for us to meet influential and powerful people because they (foolishly) believed those people represented the best of American society. In some cases they were, in other cases they were later found out to be criminals. The thing that makes these people so dangerous is that they have many different modes, and are masters of switching masks depending on the audience.

  • While I want them to release as much information as possible, this list seems misleading. The article says this is a list of people who flew on the plane, and many of them are not accused of any wrongdoing.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d be quite surprised if Cate Blanchett was looking for erotic massages from underage girls. The list of people who ever flew on the plane is going to be massive, and not all of them will be the type of people who he allowed into his criminal conspiracy. It’s just like how many more people attended a Diddy Party than attended a Diddy Party After Dark.

  • Please see my other comment about how the statistics can be misleading.

I am in no way saying that Mexico is utopia, they have their problems just like all countries do. Wealth inequality is a big problem. That doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t travel there though. If you are a traveler from outside of North America, no Mexican version of ICE is going to put you in Alligator Auschwitz.

Also, it is worth noting that many of the immigrants coming through Mexico are from South America, where there are even larger problems with poverty than in Mexico. Sure, plenty of Mexicans are coming too, but not all brown people are running from the same problem.
