I’m using whatever the stock keyboard is on Google Android. Since we’re on the topic, I’m open to suggestions. Especially if I’m going to re-train to swiping inputs.
It’s hard to pin down anything specific as an example. If I had to sum it up, its usually where I want to use a long word with a common root for others. There could be eight or so different ways to go for auto-completion, but my choice is seldom in the top three.
I’m going to just take a guess: Most people who have a problem with autocorrect type each letter individually by pressing each letter?
Possibly. I’m in that group, for what it’s worth.
Then there is/was this feature that resizes key hitboxes on the fly, based on prediction. I’m unaware if that’s still a thing, but at the time, it absolutely screwed with my thumb-typing muscle-memory in the worst way. Until I learned about this, I was convinced that I was just garbage at hitting the keys, then I started seeing it mis-register keypresses when I looked closely.
From all that I think I see the problem. These systems are compromises for a huge range of different users and communication styles. So it’s going to be pretty mid for a lot of folks until (people like me) move to the middle where the software wants people to be. Were it not for the sake of clear, personalized, and expressive communication, I’d be on board with that.
Is it just me, or does autocorrect paper-over the fact that touch-screen keyboards are kind of garbage?
For me, turning off autocorrect reveals how hard it is to be both accurate and precise with key presses on these things.

$0.02: much like AM radio (is/was), it’s basically a “2nd screen experience.” Put it on in the car or while you’re doing something else. Most of these do not deliver enough information or laughs per minute to demand your full attention. The exception are programs that are meticulously scripted, narrated, edited, produced, and sometimes acted, like NPR and the occasional oddball thing like Nightvale.
I’m not a geologist, but I’m imagine that the deep ocean would be a colossal underwater glacier, with intermixed sedimentary layers. Kind of like what we have with methane hydrate deposits, only much, much deeper. The super-deep ocean simply wouldn’t exist, and we might not even know about the Mariana Trench, or a lot of other sea floor features. Also, it’s possible a different proportion of the world’s water would be frozen in this way.
With ice as a part of the sea floor, it would also interact with subduction zones at continental edges. That might push a LOT more superheated water into volcanoes, faults, and everywhere else water could go. That would probably make for a lot more geysers in such areas, and volcanic eruptions would be far more energetic.
The trajectory of human history and technology would also be changed. There might have been fewer ice bridges between continents during the last ice age. Ice-skating wouldn’t become as common a thing until we get refrigeration. Harvesting ice in the winter would require bodies of water to freeze solid first, making it impractical except in shallow areas.
I’m also going to wager that glaciers would behave differently too. I don’t know enough about their dynamics, but I wonder if having meltwater on the bottom helps lubricate their movements somewhat. Kind of like a lava flow, only slower. Inverting that relationship might make glaciers far less mobile.
The fact that this probably doesn’t even optimize to a lookup table just gives me pain.
IMO, that’s all a part of the Rare+Nintendo hype at the time. Killer Instinct was in the same campaign for these pre-rendered 3D graphics as the wave of the future. Don’t forget, they had to go toe-to-toe with Sony’s Playstationat that time, so bringing anything that looked like real 3D on a SNES was kind of a big deal.
I won’t deny the technical achievement that this game was for Nintendo, and the coup it was for Rare (at the time). And i would never take pot-shots at anyone’s joy of nostalgia around this game: Not all of my own favorite picks are winners. But I absolutely agree with this greentext. I recall getting this game new and just feeling underwhelmed by it.
They’re literally incapable of imagining anything else. Otherwise, we’d have radically different outcomes from all this.
It also didn’t take long for the aftermath to become racially charged, either.
As it turns out, the folks most impacted by hurricanes and other weather events (e.g. flooding) are people of color. So, sending FEMA late to these sorts of things just reeks of malicious compliance.
I’m going to say that every layoff has a cover story. The goal, reduce the workforce make/save money, is really the only justification needed. Everything else is PR, and an attempt to stay out of legal hot water.
That’s always worth considering. A phone app doesn’t take a big operating budget to launch and maintain. Especially for state-actors.

Whoa, you are not kidding. The toilet is powered (not so unusual for bidet toilets), but it looks like there’s no mechanical override. Just a ‘remote’ control panel with a flush button (among many other features). That I’m sure is hygienic.
