The “Lybian Coast Guard” are EU backed and financed militias, tasked with preventing people from attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach EU countries.
Because of actions like this, I cannot get behind the idea that eu is somehow better than russia, china…
I’d say there is quantitative difference, e.g. if you count them, human rights / international law violations by the EU are far lower than by Russia, China or the US. However in terms of “quality” you will find many examples, where the EU or individual EU countries are engaged in the same type of crimes.
I.e. being involved in wars of aggression, illegal occupation, destabilizing countries through financing and arming militias (“terror groups” if they would oppose EU interests), arms exports to murderous regimes, neocolonial economic policies, crack down on civil liberties such as freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, more totalitarian surveillance measures, brutal border regimes…
We must stay vigilant and fight back against more moves into that direction, lest the EU becomes more and more like the mentioned nations.
well the EU pretends it doesn’t do this - and usually also have to respond to complaints.
like I agree the eu is shit, with lotsa shit – but it is miles ahead of dictatorships. if you talk against the government in both cases you get jail. usually pretty bad jail.
the secret police can poison you, or disappear you. and sure, in eu the state can do a lot of shit, but they can’t stop people from talking openly about it
At the moment, things aren’t as bad as in China or Russia, but the EU is heading in that direction as more authoritarian figures are elected—figures who do everything in their power to take our democracy and freedoms away.
