  • We’re past the point of being able to handle this any other way. We took the high road so many times the right can now set their watch to it. They understand that bad behavior will never be punished and “setting precedent” will mean nothing because Democrats will never use that precedent to act in a way that will give them any sort of unfair advantage.

If anyone has a way to defeat Republicans in a meaningful way without stooping to their level (gerrymandering, election denialism, obstruction, etc.) then I’d love to hear it. Otherwise, it’s time for the Democrats to roll up their sleeves and prepare to fight in the mud to save what little is left of American democracy. There’s still a chance to save the union without another civil war, but not if the opposition party doesn’t show the willingness to fight.

  • So incredibly shortsighted. We only developed the mRNA vaccine for Covid-19 in under a year because 20 years ago we started researching it for exactly this scenario. If we had only started working on that body of research when a novel virus presented itself, no amount of money would be able to speed up the clock to deliver a vaccine that verifiably saved millions of lives in the same timespan.

When, not if, the next pandemic comes around, we will want to have that body of research knowledge to help protect us against it.

Let it be known that the Covid-19 pandemic cost US taxpayers trillions of dollars (much of it lost to actual fraud) because Trump thought it would be a good idea to pinch some pennies by cutting the funding for the US-backed watchdog organization that oversaw infectious disease labs like the one in Wuhan, China. “Saving” money by not investing in disease prevention now will end up costing an exponential amount of money more than whatever you think you will end up saving in the short term.

More stupid from the stupid administration.

  • Why is this answer always so far down in the thread, right below all the nonsense and superstition that perpetuate the “cast iron is really complicated to maintain!”?

Soap and water is all you need, be sure to thoroughly dry the surface. If you get rust spots, just polish them off with a cast-iron cleaning sponge or some steel wool. Re-oil as necessary. Do not put in the dishwasher.

That’s it. Not sure why the message gets so muddled with other methods involving stripping and reseasoning and baking and such… It’s not required.

  • I just had this experience the other day. Flying SFO to BOS and it was like the security people didn’t even care. Leave everything in your bags, leave your shoes on, leave your belt on. The only thing they asked was empty your pockets, and it could all go in one bin. I thought that finally TSA was getting a bit better about not being such pricks about every little thing.

And then on my return flight, I got pulled out of the security line three times. Once for a mistake printed on my boarding pass (not my fault, but I had to get it corrected at the service kiosk anyway), once for my CPAP machine that I left in my carry on bag (which is exactly how I did it in SFO and they didn’t give a shit), and once a bottle of liquid that was 8.5oz (limit is 8.4oz), so they made me pour out 0.1oz of fucking liquid.

They yelled at me all three times and said that I should know the rules by now, but none of those things came up during my first flight. The rules change literally every time I fly somewhere, so there’s no point in memorizing them anymore. There are the “hard” rules which are sometimes not enforced and then there are the “soft” rules that seem to vary from airport to airport, or even individual TSA agents having a bad day or going on a power trip or something. I hate it.

  • Could someone just make, like, Raunchy Mastercard and just process payments from everyone including all the porn and weird shit that the other mainstream companies don’t want? It seems like the payment processors being puritanical dipshits is a weakness that could be exploited by an enterprising competitor.

But then again, we’re talking about a natural monopoly that has been in place for decades at this point. I wouldn’t expect them to exactly play fair.
