That said, the late night talk show format is baffling to me. I’ve had coworkers who seemed to earnestly enjoy them, but I thought the whole joke of letterman, leno, kimmel etc was to be intentionally unfunny, right? I just do not get it.

Fascism doesn’t voluntarily give up power. There’s no way that scandal brings down the regime. They didn’t install tech bros as officers in the military because they intend to respect the will of the electorate.

Maybe it feels elitist? Like the way he says ‘this is a particularly stupid version of fascism’ is by describing it with images that conjure up stereotypes used against the rural working class. Like you could add the word “peasant” and it wouldn’t look out of place.

Probably he was legit shot at - I think it’s irrational to believe it was staged with the evidence we currently have - but fascists love false-flag and staged attacks. Hitler’s Reichstag Fire, Putin’s Russian Appartment Bombings are two recent examples.
