It’s not that anecdotal evidence is untrustworthy, it’s that it’s only applicable to those who were the ones to experience said anecdote.

What I don’t understand is - WHY?!? They make money off of any transaction made via them. By doing this they are literally making less money. Reputation? I don’t see how it would reasonably be affected?

Agreed, I wouldn’t be surprised if 70% of posters on /pol/ were goverment employees/automated systems of various countries each pushing their own propaganda. This is true of other boards as well, but /pol/ is hardly an accurate representation.
