  • In this thread, so many people who misunderstand the meaning of “Believe women”.

Brett Kavanaugh raped a woman in high school, and had three additional accusations of sexual assault, yet all of that was ignored to put him on the Supreme Court. Donald Trump has a 67-page Wikipedia article on all the sexual assault claims against him, yet he was still a reality tv star, a popular media figure, and now president. Allegations and rumors against Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein circulated for years before anyone took things seriously enough to bother doing something about it. Brock Turner raped an unconscious woman and was let off with six months because the judge didn’t want to “ruin such a promising future” (or similar words), served it in county jail, and was released after 3 months.

“Believe women” means taking each allegation seriously instead of doubting women with questions like “are you sure you want to report this”, “are you sure it wasn’t just a misunderstanding”, “are you sure you weren’t drunk”, etc. “Believe women” means stop trying to dismiss or downplay behavior with things like “why would he do that” (Trump’s assault on the plane), or “she’s not that pretty”, or “she was asking for it”, and actually investigating the crime instead of brushing it off as a college prank, or the casting couch, or someone trying to get 15 minutes of game by accusing someone famous.

“Believe women” doesn’t mean automatically accepting every claim, but believing it enough to accept that it might have happened and conducting a thorough investigation of the alleged incident.

  • Everyone has different values, different pieces of information (and different amounts of time to do research), and different resources.

No, I don’t judge people for not boycotting something I’m boycotting, though I’ll mention it if it’s going to cause a problem. For example, a friend is a massive fan of seeing things in theaters, including re-releases. If they want to see a re-release of Harry Potter, I’ll decline, saying that I’m boycotting Rowling, and offer an alternative.

However, if they’ve been saying that they’re really for/against something and seem to be going to buy something from a company that opposes that view, I’ll mention, “Hey, I don’t know if you know, but they support XYZ.” If they still have to get it, then it’s none of my business: everyone has different needs and different resources.

  • “It’s broken and deviated from its original purpose, which is to temporarily help Americans in need,” Turner said. “HUD assistance is not supposed to be permanent.”

If you fuckers had kept the minimum wage in line with inflation, we wouldn’t have so many people on long-term assistance. Instead, you keep the minimum wage the same as it was 40(?) years ago, allow massive corporations to onboard people with the explicit instruction, “We’re not going to pay you enough, here’s how to apply for food stamps and other benefits”, then act surprised when people have to use public benefits to survive.

  • I’m on Android and turned off all Gemini features on my Google accounts. Now it refuses to let me do reverse image searches, claiming I “don’t own” the images I’m trying to reverse search. It looks like (I haven’t checked) they want me to upload the images to Drive and give Google permission to access everything again before they’ll agree to do a reverse image search for me.

Fortunately, there’s still TinEye and Yandex.
