  • And I can’t really argue with you cause, I’ll be honest with you, I’m an amateur programmer. I actually do use neovim though, I just said vim because it’s just more recognizable. Like, that’s just kinda the name of this general category of thing. Don’t have enough experience to know the difference between the two though (except that vim doesn’t clear itself from my terminal when I exit, that’s annoying. Oh and the tutor. And the color. But I haven’t experimented with any of those cool plug-ins yet…)

  • Does Microsoft understand anything? At all? They suck at making software, they suck at making operating systems, they suck at making genAI, they suck at making game consoles, they’re starting to suck at owning github, what don’t they suck at? What part of their business is done better than anyone else? What end user experience is better on an MS product than anywhere else? They have a shittier alternative to literally everything and nothing truly good.

  • From what I hear that’s actually the best way to do it. It only takes a few extra seconds and you don’t have to wear out your fridge and do weird plumbing shit. I have an ice dispenser now and it spills ice everywhere sometimes, and just randomly doesn’t have any ice to give me occasionally. And it shorts out the entire damn room or some shit sometimes so I have to lean into a crevice almost behind the fridge to press a button on the wall at ankle height to reset everything. If I don’t notice, everything in the kitchen stops working until i do notice, including the fridge which Is a very bad thing to happen for too long.

  • Endhittification is often the result of an established centralized platform that got that way via giving unfairly good deals because they had a lot of investment becoming suddenly greedy and controlling to make that money back. Matrix, meanwhile, is just a protocol. It quite literally cannot be enshittified unless the protocol is updated to do something a certain way that benefits the developers over the users, because a user can simply switch providers. Even though the org that develops it is also a provider and I hear they’re going freemium, that is a service that costs money to render. I’m not surprised they need more money to offer hosting and maintain the software behind it. Unless the protocol is being modified in a way that hinders or scams us or steals our data, saying matrix is enshittifying is like saying email or HTTP is enshittifying.

  • To be clear, I’m not saying “as powerful” when I say “as good.” A cheap old gaming PC can already play about 90% of games ever released, so why would I care about the AAA games from the last 5 years that demand newer hardware for no real reason? Terraria, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Minecraft, Cuphead, saints row 3, half life 2, portal 2, DOOM (1990s original games with mods), Crysis, Shovel Knight, etc. all have cheap as hell minimum requirements and look great. I won an auction for a laptop for 100 bucks (65 including my bid and shipping, though the charger was another 20, and the setup from scratch would include the price of mouse i used to about 100 bucks altogether) off Ebay that could play all the games listed above (except for skyrim, fo4, and maybe cuphead cause I didn’t test that game. It ran Crysis on low settings surprisingly well.)
