Southern California weather baby, at least when it’s not in climate change mode.

undefined@lemmy.hogru.chto News@lemmy.world•News publishers take paywall-blocker 12ft.io offline.2·10 hours agoI pay for Apple News. I really don’t know why everyone acts like it doesn’t exist (specifically Apple users). The UI is much better than the shit hole websites anyway.
undefined@lemmy.hogru.chto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Online Order Tracking Numbers Linked to 3rd Party Site TrackersEnglish1·16 hours agoI use Apple’s Mail on iOS and macOS that block external assets by default. But I also block all that trash via DNS too. I use Blocky loaded with tons of blocklists.

undefined@lemmy.hogru.chto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Online Order Tracking Numbers Linked to 3rd Party Site TrackersEnglish5·16 hours agoEmail tracking in general is cursed. I keep getting letters from a few companies because “you’re not receiving our emails.” No, I’m just blocking your 14 hidden pixels and not clicking your fucking
awstrack.me
links.Shout out to Postmark for allowing me (as a web developer) to avoid spying on my users by letting me disable rewriting everything as a tracking link.
undefined@lemmy.hogru.chto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Online Order Tracking Numbers Linked to 3rd Party Site TrackersEnglish6·1 day agoMy side business is a transportation management system (TMS) that communicates with shipping carriers. Because I got so frustrated with this exact problem I developed a series of “hacks” so that when this happens customers don’t actually see it marked shipped until someone confirms it.
It’s very annoying but I think it’s worth it to convey accurate information. A lot of misunderstandings and pissed off customers come from shitty tracking APIs. My other favorite is “out for delivery” when it’s not; they don’t want to get in trouble for delivering it late but by lying to people you’ve just pissed them off even more.

Yeah that’s kind of insane. I kind of get it if you’re seeing it for the first time and someone else is holding it, but to actually buy it and not realize it’s alcohol is a completely different level.

to the headline to make it more clear.

It would be nice if headlines could be very slightly modified to be more clear.

I don’t mind this problem so much but what does drive me crazy with Docker images is that oftentimes all those crazy top level files are included in the Docker image (for no reason). I’ve even seen
.git/
in Docker images.I prefer the Dockerfile itself to be at the top level but it feels like no one wants to keep their layers clean. But writing Dockerfile syntax is an art form in itself that I probably shouldn’t continue rambling about here.

At one point the State mailed a draft of the new map and explained that it was redrawn in accordance with the change in population. Overall it seemed pretty fair.
undefined@lemmy.hogru.chto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•captchas like these that don't tell you which part of the text you're supposed to inputEnglish3·3 days agoEspecially when it’s a website that requires an account but they want to use SMS-based or Google Authenticator style 2FA in 2025. “Magic links” are stupid as hell too if you’re not a moron and use a decent password manager — I have no clue what random email address I generated for you since I can’t trust any company not to sell off my PII.
How hard is it to implement FIDO2 then let valid users make requests from whatever IP address they want? IP-based blocking is pretty fucking stupid if you’re already doing secure account-based authorization.
Saying all this as a heavily privacy-conscious web developer. All my traffic looks “suspicious” because how dare I not want your shit hole website to put its grubby little hands all over my IP address.

And no salt on the fries during rush when the fries are already fresh + multiple salt packets.
I think it should be “and/or” because if it’s just “or” the terms would only apply if you either open it or use it.
