First on LateNighter: Stephen Colbert’s 'Late Show' continued to post near-record numbers in his second full week of shows since CBS announced the show’s cancellation.
It’s a cancellation bump. It happens a lot and was expected. However the show has been haemorrhaging viewers the past few seasons, and now loses around $40m a year. It has been the highest rated late night show on TV, but has failed to cut through on YouTube, which is where the ad money is slowly shifting.
I’m not sure any network that doesn’t already have one has any intention of entering the late night space. It’s time is over.
He’ll make a fortune on a premium podcast deal though.
Some network will pick him up after this. They would be stupid not to. He is on fire, especially now that the gloves are off.
Maybe HBO? Or HBO Go. Or HBO MAX. Or MAX. Or HBO MAX Reloaded.
