MiDaBa@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•Linux Reaches 5% Desktop Market Share In USAEnglish4·1 month agoIt really depends on your hardware. I have a Dell XPS with an 11th gen Intel i5 that I’m running Fedora (Gnome desktop environment) on and it was rock solid from minute one. Things to check:
-
Make sure your network card is supported. Intel network cards are some of the better choices for open source compatibility. On most laptops this can be swapped out if necessary.
-
Camera
-
Touchpad
-
Fingerprint sensor
-
Sound driver
-
Any niche functions or modules. Think things like a secondary display on the keyboard, speciality ports etc.
Support is much better now than in the past and remember you don’t need everything to work to have a good time. My fingerprint sensor doesn’t work but it didn’t work well under windows so no big loss for me.
- You can always use a live bootable USB drive to test your hardware without having to commit to anything. This will tell you a lot about the experience you might have after installation. Heck, if you’re board you can try this right now and it won’t touch your current hard drive or operating system.

I guarantee Google already has a fog of war map of every place you’ve ever been

Honestly, I’d be fine with a fast travel sign post as long as worked as intended.

Nvidia is using the “its fake news” strategy now? My how the mighty have fallen.
I’ve said it many times but publicly traded companies are destroying the world. The fact they have to increase revenue every single year is not sustainable and just leads to employees being underpaid, products that are built cheaper and invasive data collection to offset their previous poor decisions.
MiDaBa@lemmy.mlto politics @lemmy.world•'Just in': Elon Musk officially launches new political party1·2 months agoI personally believe ranked choice voting is the only thing left that could possibly save this country. When only two large powerful organizations control our entire political system things will not go well. On top of that, it encourages team sports mentality where people adopt political positions simply to support their team. Worst yet, it gives these parties too much power to control candidates who stray from the party line. If you’re running as a Democrat and have even one opinion that doesn’t align with the script you’ll be pushed out. Republicans mostly didn’t agree with Trump until he took the party over and used that power to push out anyone who didn’t agree with him. If we had multiple parties it would be a lot harder to stop a candidate who deviated on opinion and that’s the way it should be.

MiDaBa@lemmy.mlto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•I mean, that's literally the opposite of what I wantEnglish1·7 months agoApple is probably pushing that Ad free of charge. Considering how quickly Tim preemptively bent the knee just on the chance it would benefit him and the shareholders is obscene. I’ve always known Tim only cared about money. After all, that’s the only thing he did better than Steve Jobs. Now I know for sure that he’s a worthless selfish waste of a human being.
He won’t affect global policy much at all. He’s a threat to the mega wealthy because he’s a symbol of change in the American people.
This is the same reason the elite went so hard on the communist scare late last century. Back then certain political views were almost a criminal offense. Hopefully history doesn’t repeat itself here.
