  • Society can not exist in the way that we evolved.

We don’t get a choice about it. We have to have a society and we cannot live in any other way than we’ve evolved, so our societies are going to be a reflection of our natures. We can build it blindly and just let whatever happen, or we can make informed decisions about the kind of future we want to have.

But we’re intelligent and can mitigate the harmful parts our biological drives with cognition and we do this all day every day, but we still have biological imperatives that we can’t escape from.

You can choose to not consume cake because you know you’re not calorie-starved even though nature rewards you for it. You cannot however have good mental health while in isolation. Understanding what parts of our nature are flexible or what parts need to be managed around is the fundamental thing I’m talking about here. Just like you will be healthier if you eat more vegetables like we were adapted for, your society will be healthier if it values community like we’ve been adapted for.

    Again. Rose colored glasses.

You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  • I remember growing up and learning about how horrible the past was to children, with everything from forced marriages to older men, to having to work in literal coal mines and industrial machines. How there was a serious phrase “Children are to be seen, not heard” as advice for parents to keep their kids silent. To say nothing of how literally beating your children just as daily ritual was considered normal for centuries.

I thought “Wow, thank God I am growing up in a civilized era that respects children as human beings.”

  • Kimmel has already said this is his last season, voluntarily.

Remember that when Conan was forced out, he had specific gag orders about what he could say or not, so take the “voluntary” part with a few grains of salt until that potential gag order expires, if it ever does.

Really what’s happening is fascist censorship of opposition voices and satire is a powerful tool in speaking truth to power, making comedians highly threatening to fascists. Corporations like Skydance don’t care about civilization or a better world, they need line to go up, and the fastest, most efficient way to get that line up is to buy some fascists to run the country you’re located in.

  • Late show was also just nominated for an Emmy.

Kimmel and John Stewart are in fact being targeted next.

I predicted that this would happen if the country started an irreversible slide into fascist warlord dictatorship, I just thought it would be much further down the road.

Watch, in about a year all of these comedians and liberal pundits are going to be replaced by right-wing grifters and podcasters capturing the stupid, populist attention spans of people who just want to stare at flashing lights and listen to people screaming about how evil trans children are interrupted by ads for essential oils and testosterone supplements. This isn’t an exaggeration, this is what we can expect.

The people who need to read this cannot read.

I wish that was a joke. There is a direct correlation with the rise of fascism and the decline of American reading scores. Currently nearly a quarter of our adult population is functionally illiterate. Meaning they can identify words, they can send texts, they can reply to messages or read headlines, but are incapable of anything more advanced than that.

We somehow think that there’s a sharp line between “cannot read at all” and “can sit down with a paperback and be whisked away to another world” when actually it’s a spectrum, like everything else.

Really what this means is that a sizeable set of our population, because they suck at reading, also suck at forming language in their heads, and because of this cannot manage and consider complicated, abstract ideas or reframe thoughts into words that can be analyzed. When you live like this, you tend to just go along with whatever other people are doing and you have intense emotional reactions to everything you see.

  • I had a loved-one have to be intubated and was on life-support for around 3-weeks. The total bill in the end was over 2 million USD.

Fortunately I was unemployed at the time and had state-subsidised low-income healthcare so I paid very little out-of-pocket. If it had happened when we were working it probably would have cost us over 50k in deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.

Do not ask me to make it make sense. I have lived in this “system” my entire life and I hate every moment of this dreamworld nonsense.

  • Unrelated to anything, but I just find this funny because I have had to talk to so, so many young men as an older guy who has done mentorship/coaching.

I’m neck deep into my 30s atm and at this point, looks matters very little. My boyfriend has very short hair and hasn’t worn band shirts for almost two decades but he’s still a total snack to me.

You and a hundred million women in their 30’s will repeat this sentiment all day every day. But the moment one ditzy college-age girl says on twitter that she prefers tall guys who wear expensive watches, suddenly an army of incels is born as that one take gets sent all the way to the top of every social media feed and carves out an entire new political movement.

  • While nothing you said is incorrect from your own personal views and desires, avoiding fashion or stylistic expression is as much your own paradigm as someone who does choose to wear certain things or express themselves in certain ways. IE: choosing no style is also a style. You simply cannot escape self-expression unless you are utterly alone on an island, and it could be argued that even then self-expression will be valuable for preserving your sense of self.

Self expression and creating identity is just a human thing that we’re never going to get away from, nor should we unless we’re ready to like… become absorbed by some kind of hive-mind. We are social creatures, we literally can die without social identity.

  • Opposites often attract wildly.

A lot of really “standard” guys who dress in polos and jeans will look at a girl in a black leather schoolgirl outfit and see mystery, sexual freedom, experimentation, and all the dangers that mother warned you about. It represents an escape from social chains and it’s not just a sexual kink, but it can really feel nice to imagine having someone who challenges your preconceived notions or gets you “out of your shell” because a lot of men have no idea how to do that and fantasize about meeting someone who drags them by the arm through life to get them to enjoy things they’d be afraid to try on their own.

Speaking as a man who’s partner has filled this role for many, many years.

  • It depends so much on regional norms.

Out on the West Coast of the US, painted nails on men is very common, while usually an indicator of an “alt” lifestyle or a particular attachment to fashion, it’s not entirely uncommon to see a dude in a suit with black nails and might only get a few passing comments like “Wow, you pull that off!” or “Haha, how does your wife feel about you using her cosmetics?” at worst.

But if you move East by one state boundary you literally might get cussed out or glanced at like a predator or worse, depending on how deep you go into small town mormon communities and the like.
